Weekend Getaway in Santa Barbara

Last weekend Will and I took off for Santa Barbara.  Our good friends Beth and Trev got married on Saturday and I was especially excited it look place in Santa Barbara – it was my first visit.

We took off Friday night around 7 and picked up my good friend Jake (and old roomie once upon a time) for the ride to Santa Barbara.  We got in around 1 am, checked into the hotel and went right to bed.

The next day we got up early for breakfast with Jake and then the three of us took a walk around Stearns Wharf.  Of course we had to stop for a photo op in front the of dolphin fountain.

On Sunday we woke up early and ate breakfast by the beach.  Then we drove up to Mission Santa Barbara and took a brief tour.  The mission was built in 1786 and its original purpose was the christianazation of the Chumash Indians. This was considered accomplished by the 1930′s.

On Sunday afternoons local artists come out and make chalk paintings on the pavement around the mission.  There were enormous crowds and hoards of fair-like fare: hotdogs, ribs, sweets, etc.  Some of the artwork blew us away.

We then grabbed a delicious lunch on State Street.  Of course, with all the stores surrounding us we had to do some shopping.  I was incredibly excited to find a fabulous cupcake store Crushcakes Bakery.  Anyone in Santa Barbara should definitely check them out – the strawberry cupcakes are the best.

We were in dire need of a nap – and some beer- at that point so we went back to our hotel to read and drink in the sun. After a few hours we got antsy and hungry so we headed back out to the waterfront for some seafood. We went to the Waterfront Grill for an amazing dinner.  We had some wine/beer then ordered oysters in a half shell – they were so fresh I would have eaten three more orders if I could have.  Will had blackened oysters and I had crusted halibut with a miso lobster sauce – rich but incredibly good.

We left this morning at 5:30 am to get our rental car back by Noon. In all, we had an awesome weekend. Santa Barbara is an adorable town, I am shocked I hadn’t ever been there before.

Hope everyone had a great three-day weekend. Back to the grind tomorrow…
